Bibliometric technique of citation analysis was applied to the data of Geophysics, 1980 Volume. The distribution of citation frequencies is found of negative exponential nature. The average half-life of the literature was determined and found to be 9.4 years. Brookes technique of calculating Annual Aging Factor (AAF= a) was applied to demonstrate its applicability for different periods of classic literature. The results could be utilized for managing the resources and services for the users of Information in Exploration Geophysics.- A Comparative Analysis of Obsolescence of Periodical Literature of Petroleum Geology

Age distributions of citations received by the American Association, of Petroleum Geologist Bulletin for the years 1960, 1970 and 1979 were analysed. Citation distributions were statistically tested by applying K-S Test, found to be negative exponential. Obsolescence factors were determined. The average halflife for 1960 data was found to be 7.6 years while 6.2 and 6.1 years for 1970 and 1979 respectively. The year 1970 received comparatively more citations than the others which shows increased research activity in seventies and more visibility and use of literature in these years. Percentage of citations for the first decades have increased from 60% to 70% from 1960 to 1970 and 1979 which indicates greater use of recent literature.- Author Productivity Patterns: Geoscientific Literature of Nigeria for the Period, 1904-1979

A bibliography of geoscientific literature of Nigeria for the period 1904-1979 containing a total of 1,005 items was analysed to test the applicability of Lotka’s law and the negative binomial distribution model to author productivity distribution patterns. Four different files were created out of data on author productivity: First for the total period, 1904 1979; second for the period, 1904-1959, third for the period, 1960-1969, and fourth for the period 1970-1979, a decade considered as oil boom period. Lotka’s law could apply in its original form as inverse square law in all the eases but a better fit was found in two eases with different values of a. Both chi-square and K-S statistical tests were applied to all four data sets and were found satisfactory at 0.05 and 0.01 levels of significance respectively. Negative binomial distribution was found fitting better than Lotka’s distribution. Keywords
